Description
Meets MnTC Goal Areas 6 and 7. Students will explore the technical and artistic elements of theatre, examine theatre spaces and the roles of theatre artists and technicians, and study the history of theatre. Students will critically analyze a variety of works of theatre through reading scripts and viewing productions. Discussions will include how works of theatre express historical and social values which change over time, including power inequalities, identities, and contributions by diverse groups. No prior theatre background necessary.

  1. Articulate an informed personal reaction to works of theatre.
  2. Demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of theatrical works by reading dramatic literature and observing live or recorded live productions.
  3. Engage in the creative process by interpreting, preparing, and performing a theatrical piece.
  4. Analyze, evaluate, and respond critically to dramatic literature through reading scripts and viewing productions.
  5. Discuss how theatrical works are expressions of individual and human values within a historical and social context.
  6. Define and analyze performance and technical elements, different theatre spaces and the various collaborators needed for a theatrical production, including producers, directors, designers, actors and technicians.
  7. Articulate how theatre is an integral part of culture and society throughout history, how it has evolved and how it has been shaped by - and has shaped - the culture and society in which it was created.
  8. Describe how theatre reflects the experiences of diverse group identities and power inequalities in past and contemporary society.
  9. Discuss the experiences and contributions of the many groups that have shaped American society and culture, including those that have suffered discrimination and exclusion.
