Cosmetology

You’ll have your choice of professional cosmetology careers upon completion of this comprehensive diploma program, which provides salon practice and classroom-based coursework on an array of skin, hair and nail services. You can choose to become a general cosmetologist or specialize in areas such as hair care and coloring, perms, makeup applications, facials and manicures. 

Preparation for the Minnesota State Board of Cosmetology licensure exams is a component of this program, and you'll participate in practice tests and mock skills certifications.

You’ll learn: 

• Knowledge and technical skills to become a proficient cosmetologist
• Ethical and professional behavior and soft skills for working with people in a salon environment
• State regulations for license holders
• Sanitation and safety procedures
• Safe preparation and use of salon equipment and supplies
• Preparation of chemical formulas and knowledge of products used to perform cosmetology services

Services to the public

M State cosmetology and massage therapy students gain valuable real-world experience by offering reduced-rate salon and spa services to the public at our in-house student salon on the Wadena campus. The fall application period opens Sept. 1 for the following academic year.

Once you've applied to M State, please send copies of your high school transcript and any official college transcripts (if applicable) to records@minnesota.edu.

Acceptance to M State does NOT guarantee a seat in this program. Seats are limited and awarded on a first-come first-serve basis by registering for classes.
