About this program
A hair technician is any person who performs services for the cosmetic care of the hair on the scalp. Hair technician services include cutting the hair and the application of dyes, bleach, reactive chemicals, keratin or other preparations to color or alter the structure of the hair. Hair technician training includes 900 hours of training in hair services. Upon completion of the 900-hour training program and passing test scores in hair technician general theory, written practical and MN laws and rules pertaining to hair technician services, an applicant may apply for licensure.

- Relate the knowledge and technical procedures to perform proficiently in all hair technician skills.
- Apply ethical behaviors and human relation skills with patrons, employers and co-workers.
- Show professionalism in all relationships in the hair technician salon environment.
- Know and understand the Minnesota state laws, rules and regulations that pertain to the individual policies or responsibilities of all hair technician license holders.
- Know employee sanitation procedures and perform safety procedures in compliance with Minnesota laws and rules.
- Evaluate hair and skin disorders or diseases that should be referred to a physician.
- Prepare and know the specific uses and safety of all equipment and supplies used in the hair technician salon.
- Prepare the chemical formulas necessary to ensure accurate product knowledge to perform hair technician services.
