In this course, students develop a strong foundation in haircutting. Students cover foundational concepts, essential techniques and knowledge required to provide exceptional service to clients.

Competencies

  1. Define angles, elevations and guidelines.
  2. Outline the safety guidelines and precautions for haircutting services.
  3. Explain how to conduct a thorough haircut client consultation.
  4. Observe proper steps in performing haircut services.
  5. Identify the four types of tools required to perform haircut services and the proper decontamination practices required to remain compliant with the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology.
  6. Understand various natural textures, including straight, wavy, curly and coily.
  7. Determine the different diameters of the natural hair strand and classify as fine, medium or course.
  8. Determine the different density of natural hair and classify as thin, medium and thick.
  9. Demonstrate and explain the uses of various haircutting tools and how to hold them.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of the bone structure of the scalp.
  11. Demonstrate different texturizing techniques performed with shears.
