This course prepares students to conduct hairstyling services that meet the needs of clients. Students learn the proper use of hot tools, styling tools and products to achieve desired results on all hair types and textures.

- Understand various natural textures, including straight, wavy, curly and coily.
- Determine the different diameters of the natural hair strand and classify as fine, medium or course.
- Determine the different density of natural hair and classify as thin, medium or thick.
- Analyze the porosity of natural hair to determine temperature of styling tools.
- Outline the safety guidelines and precautions for hairstyling services.
- Explain how to conduct a thorough hairstyling client consultation.
- Observe proper steps in performing hairstyling services.
- Identify the four types of tools required to perform hairstyling services and the proper decontamination practices required to remain compliant with the Minnesota Board of Cosmetology.
- Describe professional tools and their specific uses.
- Describe the different types, handling and safety precautions of thermal tools used by salon professionals.
- Explain the different types of wet sets and how to perform them.
- Recognize different ways to achieve volume pertaining to base placement, and identify on-base, half-base and off base.
- Describe the importance of updo preparation, sectioning, pinning and balance.
