Description
This introductory course for Medical Laboratory Technology students covers the clinical areas of blood banking and transfusion medicine. The course discusses compatibility theory, principles of antigens on red blood cells and serum antibodies.
Prerequisites
  • Admission to MLT program.

Competencies
  1. Discuss basic immunology principles as they relate to blood banking.
  2. Recognize an ABO and Rh typing discrepancy.
  3. Differentiate the major blood groups' clinical significance in immunohematology.
  4. Justify requirements for blood donors and reasons for rejection of blood donors.
  5. Investigate the cause and effect of hemolytic disease of the newborn and hemolytic transfusion reactions.
  6. Compare transfusion reactions as to cause, signs, symptoms, prognosis and resolutions.
  7. Determine appropriate component therapy for patient conditions.
  8. Describe the various components utilized in transfusion medicine.
  9. Compare transfusion-transmitted diseases.
