Radiologic Technology Admission Requirements

To be considered for the Radiologic Technology program, you must apply to and be accepted to M State. The application for the Radiologic Technology program is separate. You must be accepted to M State to access the Radiologic Technology program application.

New to M State - Follow the admissions checklist at Admissions. 

Returning to M State - Submit an online application for admission at Admissions. If you have attended another college since you last attended M State, you will also need to request that your official transcript be sent to the M State Processing Center.

Students should allow up to six weeks for transfer work to be received, evaluated and entered into their Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS) audit. Transfer courses will not count toward admission to the program until they have been evaluated by the M State transfer specialist and successfully transferred.

Current M State student - If you are currently attending M State, you will not need to update your application to the college. 

You must submit the Radiologic Technology program application to be considered for the program. Please read and understand the eligibility criteria before applying. You must be accepted to M State to access the program application.

Fall 2027 Radiologic Technology program application will be available Nov. 19.

The application deadline is January 15, 2027.

Students who have not completed COMM 1140 Interpersonal Communication and Math 1114 College Algebra and who do not have recent Accuplacer, ACT scores or high school GPA waivers are required to complete placement testing. Students who need to complete placement testing should visit Placement Testing for testing dates and locations.

Applicants must earn an overall score of 60 or higher on the HSRT-AD to be considered for admission.

Points will be awarded based on the score achieved. 

90-100 = 10 points 
80-89 = 7 points    
70-79 = 4 points 
60-69 = 1 point 
59 or below = not eligible 

HSRT-AD scores expire one year after the test date. HSRT-AD scores must be valid at the time of the application deadline.

Applicants are allowed to take the HSRT-AD up to two times for the fall 2027 application cycle. If taking the test for a second time, applicants must wait two weeks (14 calendar days) between test attempts.

The HSRT-AD must be taken at an M State campus. For more information regarding the HSRT-AD, including special accommodations, exam dates, and how to register, visit HSRT Exam. 

Math requirement: Math scores on the Accuplacer/ACT or high school GPA must place the student into MATH 1114 College Algebra or higher. Students testing into developmental math must complete the highest-level developmental course with a grade of C or higher prior to starting the program.
 

English requirement: Reading scores on the Accuplacer/ACT or high school GPA must place the student into ENGL 1101 College Writing. Students testing into developmental English must complete the highest-level developmental course with a grade of C or higher prior to starting the program.

The following prerequisite general education courses will be used to calculate points for program acceptance. Any four of the of the six prerequisite courses must be successfully completed with a grade of C or higher prior to application review. If more than four courses are completed at the time of application review, all courses will be used to calculate points.

• BIOL 2260 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (3 credits)
• BIOL 2262 Human Anatomy and Physiology II (3 credits)
• MATH 1114 College Algebra (4 credits)
• PHYS 1105 Fundamental Concepts of Physics (3 credits)
• RADT 1102 Fundamental Concepts of Radiologic Technology (2 credits)
• COMM 1140 Interpersonal Communication or Goal area 1 completed (3 credits)

If transferring credits to M State, it's recommended you visit with an academic advisor to determine course equivalency and how credits will be used to determine points.

BIOL 2260 and BIOL 2262 must have been completed within five years prior to the program start date. For the fall 2027 start, the course must have been taken fall 2022 or later.

If you have earned college credits for any of the required Radiologic Technology general education courses, you must have an average GPA of at least 2.5 in each of the courses to be considered for acceptance into the program. The following criteria are not required to be considered for the Radiologic Technology program. If you have completed the optional admission criteria, you may increase your chance of acceptance. • Minimum of six months of healthcare work experience in one of the following roles or medical experience in healthcare:
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant
  • TA - Technologist Assistant
  • IMA - Imaging MRI Assistant
  • LXMO - Limited X-ray Machine Operator
  • Lab Tech
  • EMT - Emergency Medical Technician

Calculate points for admission to the Radiologic Technology program.

Program applicants who meet the required admission criteria will be assigned points for their HSRT-AD overall score, completion of prerequisite courses, and the additional optional admission criteria. The additional optional criteria, referred to as "beneficial admission criteria," may increase your chances of being accepted to the program. To receive points, admission criteria must be completed and submitted by the application deadline.

All eligible applicants will be ranked by their total points earned. 

In the case of one or more ties, we will use the following tiebreaker criteria:

1. HSRT overall score
2. Number of prerequisite courses completed
3. Application date and time

The sixteen (16) eligible applicants who score the highest will be selected for admission to the Radiologic Technology program. The next five (5) applicants will be placed on the waiting list as alternates.

• Applicants who are in the process of completing courses will not receive points for those courses.
• All BIOL courses must be completed within the past five years to be eligible for points. For the fall 2027 program start, the course must have been taken fall 2022 or later. 
• You may apply before you have completed all of the prerequisite courses, but you must have completed at least four of the six prerequisite courses prior to the application deadline.

Each student who has submitted a complete admissions file by the posted deadline will receive an email from the college indicating whether they are accepted into the program, placed on the program waiting list or currently ineligible for the program. 

All the prerequisite courses must be completed prior to the start date of the Radiologic Technology program.Students are conditionally accepted until all prerequisite courses are completed.

Students are required to have a laptop computer for Radiologic Technology coursework. The cost for a laptop computer will be in addition to the cost of tuition, fees and books. Specifications are listed at Computer Requirements. 

The clinical facilities used by the Radiologic Technology program require students to have a current American Heart Association/Health Care Providers CPR certificate. Students must present proof of CPR certificate before the start of Radiologic Technology clinical courses.

A background check is a mandatory review of an individual’s criminal history as recorded by the state of Minnesota and/or the federal government. Students in M State's healthcare programs must pass background check(s) before being assigned to clinical sites where they will have contact with patients.

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists also requires an ethics review and background check before an individual can take the ARRT registry exam to be certified as a radiologic technologist. To ensure students meet these requirements, a background check must be performed prior to starting M State’s Radiologic Technology core classes.

M State advisors can help find alternative education options for students who do not pass the required Radiologic Technology background checks and cannot provide direct patient care.

Instructions for completing background checks will be provided via official M State email from Joel Hoffman, nursing lab assistant.

Accepted students are required to complete a health form before they are eligible to start core Radiologic Technology courses.

The Radiologic Technology Program Handbook contains information about program policies and standards. Accepted students must review the handbook and agree to abide by the policies and standards.

Clinical rotations are generally scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Students will be required to complete occasional evening and weekend assignments throughout the program.
