Phlebotomy Technician

Become an important part of the medical patient diagnosis and treatment process with our phlebotomy technician certificate program. You’ll be trained to safely draw blood from patients for various lab tests and will practice standard procedures as well as troubleshooting if instruments malfunction or unexpected results occur. 

You’ll learn professional communication skills, safety and infection control standards, and other skills needed for employment in an outpatient clinic or hospital setting. The program includes a valuable five-week clinical experience at an affiliate healthcare facility. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared for the phlebotomy Board of Certification exam.

Learning Outcomes  

After successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

1. Evaluate the importance of patient identification, collection, transport, and processing of blood/ body fluid specimens for analysis
2. Safely collect and process biological specimens for analysis
3. Perform accurate laboratory testing including quality assurance and quality control procedures within their scope of practice
4. Operate laboratory instruments/analyzers and perform preventative and corrective maintenance when required within their scope of practice
5. Apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures
6. Recognize factors that affect procedures and results and take appropriate actions within their scope of practice when corrections are indicated
7. Demonstrate multitasking skills where a wide variety of testing procedures are performed
8. Correlate didactic and clinical phases of laboratory testing in evaluation and interpretation of laboratory test data within their scope of practice
9. Demonstrate career entry competencies as defined by applicable accrediting and certification organizations
10. Demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, health care professionals and the public
11. Recognize the responsibilities of other laboratory and health care personnel and interact with them with respect for their jobs and patient care
12. Recognize and act upon individual needs for continued education as a function of growth and maintenance of professional competence

Background Check, Immunization Requirements

Students in this program must meet criminal background check requirements and have current immunizations. Requirements are listed in tab below.

To participate in required clinical rotations, students enrolled in the Phlebotomy Program must meet all vaccination and immunization requirements established by our clinical partner sites. Prior to registration, students must provide documentation showing that required vaccinations are completed, in progress, or that immunity titers demonstrate prior immunity, as applicable. Failure to meet these requirements may prevent placement in clinical experiences and could delay or impact program completion.

Series Vaccination Requirements:

Students should begin all multi-dose vaccine series as early as possible. Documentation of the first dose in each required series (or proof of immunity through titers, where applicable) must be submitted before registering for courses. 

• Hepatitis B
  • Three-dose vaccine series required.
• Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Two-dose vaccine series or a positive immunity titer is required.
• Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  • Two-dose vaccine series or a positive immunity titer is required.

Single-Dose Requirements:

Can be completed after initial registration, but before clinical rotations.

• Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap)
  • Documentation of a Tdap vaccine completed within the last 10 years is required.
  • May be completed in September.
• Influenza
  • Current season's influenza vaccine is required prior to clinical rotations.
  • May be completed in September.
• QuantiFERON-TB Gold (Tuberculosis Blood Test)
  • Must be completed within 60 days of clinical rotations.
  • Do not complete prior to September.
