Limited Scope Radiography Admission Requirements

To be considered for the Limited Scope Radiography program, students must be accepted to M State. The application for the LSR program is separate. You must be accepted to M State to access the LSR program application.

New to M State - Follow the admissions checklist at Admissions. 

Returning to M State - Submit an online application for admission at Admissions. If you have attended another college since you last attended M State, you will also need to ask that the official transcript be sent to the M State Processing Center.

Students should allow up to six weeks for transfer work to be received, evaluated and entered onto their Degree Audit Report. Transfer courses will not count toward admission to the program until they have been evaluated by the M State transfer specialist and successfully transferred.

Current M State student - If you are currently attending M State, you will not need to update your application to the college. 

The Limited Scope Radiography program application must be submitted for an applicant to be considered for the program. Students who miss the fall start deadline may be eligible to enroll in general education courses and complete program admission requirements before the next fall start. 

Fall 2027 Limited Scope Radiography program application will be available Nov. 19.

Students who have not completed COMM 1140 Interpersonal Communication and MATH 1020 Intermediate Algebra and who do not have recent Accuplacer, ACT scores or high school GPA waivers are required to complete placement testing. Students who need to complete placement testing should visit Placement Testing for testing dates and locations.

Applicants must earn an overall score of 60 or higher on the HSRT-AD to be considered for admission.

Points will be awarded based on the score achieved. 

90-100 = 10 points 
80-89 = 7 points    
70-79 = 4 points 
60-69 = 1 point 
59 or below = not eligible 

HSRT-AD scores expire one year after the test date. HSRT-AD scores must be valid at the time of the application deadline.

Applicants are allowed to take the HSRT-AD up to two times for the fall 2027 application cycle. If taking the test for a second time, applicants must wait two weeks (14 calendar days) between test attempts.

The HSRT-AD must be taken at an M State campus. For more information regarding the HSRT-AD, including special accommodations, exam dates, and how to register, visit HSRT Exam. 

Math requirement: Math scores on the Accuplacer/ACT or high school GPA must place the student into MATH 1114 College Algebra or higher. Students testing into developmental math must complete the highest-level developmental course with a grade of C or higher prior to starting the program.
 

English requirement: Reading scores on the Accuplacer/ACT or high school GPA must place the student into ENGL 1101 College Writing. Students testing into developmental English must complete the highest-level developmental course with a grade of C or higher prior to starting the program.

The following Limited Scope Radiography prerequisite courses must be satisfactorily completed (grade of C or better) prior to the application deadline: 

• BIOL 2260 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (3 credits)*
• COMM 1140 Interpersonal Communication OR MnTC Goal Area 1 completed (3 credits)
• RADT 1102 Fundamental Concepts of Radiologic Technology (2 credits)

*Course must have been completed within five years before the program start date. For the fall 2027 start, the course must have been taken fall 2022 or later.

If transferring credits to M State, it's recommended you visit with an academic advisor to determine course equivalency and how credits will be used to determine points.

The following criteria are not required to be considered for the Limited Scope Radiography program. If you have completed the optional admission criteria, you may increase your chance of acceptance. • Minimum of six months of healthcare work experience in one of the following roles or medical experience in healthcare:
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant
  • TA - Technologist Assistant
  • IMA - Imaging MRI Assistant
  • LXMO - Limited X-ray Machine Operator
  • Lab Tech
  • EMT - Emergency Medical Technician

Calculate points for admission to the Limited Scope Radiography program.

Program applicants who meet the required admission criteria will be assigned points for their HSRT-AD overall score, completion of prerequisite courses, and the additional optional admission criteria. The additional optional criteria, referred to as "beneficial admission criteria," may increase your chances of being accepted to the program. To receive points, admission criteria must be completed and submitted by the application deadline.

All eligible applicants will be ranked by their total points earned. 

In the case of one or more ties, the applicant's HSRT overall score will be used as a tiebreaker. In the event that a tie still exists, the application submission date will be used.

The sixteen (16) eligible applicants who score the highest will be selected for admission to the Limited Scope Radiography program. The next five (5) applicants will be placed on the waiting list as alternates.

You may apply before you have completed all of the prerequisite courses, but you must have completed them prior to the application deadline.

Each student who has submitted a complete admissions file by the posted deadline will receive an email from the college indicating whether they are accepted into the program, placed on the program waiting list as an alternate or currently ineligible for the program. 

Applicants will be notified of their status within 30 days after the application deadline.

Students are required to have a laptop computer for Limited Scope Radiography coursework. The cost for a laptop computer will be in addition to the cost of tuition, fees and books. Specifications are listed at Computer Requirements. 

The clinical facilities used by the Limited Scope Radiography program require students to have a current American Heart Association/Health Care Providers CPR certificate. Students must present proof of CPR certificate before the start of Limited Scope Radiography clinical courses.

A background check is a mandatory review of an individual's criminal history as recorded by the state of Minnesota and/or the federal government. Students in M State's healthcare programs must pass background check(s) before being assigned to clinical sites where they will have contact with patients.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services Background Check is a requirement for students accepted into the LSR program. A $54.50 fee will be assessed for processing the background study and fingerprinting/photo. The process for background studies and fingerprinting will be included with your acceptance email.

Accepted students who choose not to complete the background check OR who do not pass the background check may not be permitted to attend clinical experiences or service-learning opportunities. In such cases, the college cannot guarantee alternative learning opportunities, which ultimately will affect the student's ability to complete the program.

Accepted students are required to complete a health form before they are eligible to start core Limited Scope Radiography courses.

The Limited Scope Radiography Program Handbook contains information about program policies and standards. Accepted students must review the handbook and agree to abide by the policies and standards.

Clinical rotations are generally scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Students will be required to complete occasional evening and weekend assignments throughout the program.

Students are required to travel to any clinical education setting associated with the program.
