Meets MnTC Goal Areas 2 and 6. This course provides basic approaches to the study of music in the Western notated tradition as the organization and interaction of musical elements: melody, harmony, rhythm, form and color, with emphasis in the tonic-dominant harmony. Involves analysis and composition. It must be taken concurrently with MUSC1124.

  1. Imagine and seek out a variety of interpretations and perspectives with regard to music analysis.
  2. Gather factual information regarding music of the Common Practice period and apply it to given musical problems.
  3. Discuss music theory in verbal and notated presentation, conscious of possible bias in the parameters used in gathering the information.
  4. Continue to analyze the logical connections among music theory, aural analysis and the creative drive relevant to musical situations.
  5. Demonstrate awareness of the scope and variety of musical works of the Common Practice era.
  6. Respond critically to music of the Common Practice era.
  7. Engage in the compositions of short pieces of music.
