Description
Meets MnTC Goal Areas 5 and 10. This survey course explores the cultural, social, political and economic development of Minnesota and the northern Great Plains. Topics will include the significance of geography and natural resources, relations between Native American and European populations, and key events in the economic and political development of the region. Emphasis will be placed on the interaction between human development and the natural environment.

  1. Identify significant features of the geography and natural environments of Minnesota and the Northern Plains.
  2. Describe the prominent Native American cultures of the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.
  3. Summarize the major routes and pathways by which Europeans explored the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.
  4. Analyze interactions between Native Americans and European settlers.
  5. Summarize major events and factors in the period of territorial growth.
  6. Analyze the importance of water and rail transportation as contributors to population growth in the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains.
  7. Interpret the significance of extraction industries and their role in the development of the economic, political, and social systems of Minnesota and the Northern Plains.
  8. Explore issues of cultural and ethnic diversity and how different cultural and ethnic identities have influenced the region over time.
  9. Analyze the importance of political movements in the region, such as populism, progressivism, the Grange movement, the Farm-Labor Party, Nonpartisan League and the Sagebrush Rebellion.
  10. Evaluate the role that geography and the environment have played in the political, cultural and socioeconomic development of Minnesota and the Northern Plains.
