Description
This course provides an overview of the developmental stages of children ages prenatal through 8, including physical, social, emotional, language, cognitive and creative development. While studying the integration of theory and developmentally appropriate best practice, students observe children and analyze characteristics of development at various stages. Attention is focused on theory, developmentally appropriate, best practice and environmental factors that may affect development.

- Examine the physical, social, emotional, language, cognitive and creative development of children from birth through age 8 and how development and learning are integrated.
- Describe how to support the development and learning of individual children through understanding of how they differ in their development and approaches to learning.
- Examine and identify how the major theories of early childhood development and learning affect our current practice with families and children from birth through age 8.
- Examine and describe why it is crucial to support and promote the concepts of "belonging" and "family connectedness" throughout the early childhood environment and curriculum, including teacher interactions.
- Describe the importance of building, maintaining and promoting a primary care relationship with each infant and toddler through the environment and curriculum, including teacher interactions.
- Examine and describe how development in the infant/toddler years affects the learning and development of preschoolers.
- Understand how students construct knowledge and acquire skills.
- Understand that each student's cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and physical development influence learning, and make instructional decisions that build on learners' strengths, needs and cultural ways of knowing.
- Understand the influence of tobacco, alcohol and drug use on student life and learning.
