Description
This course introduces students to the concepts of professional nursing. It includes the evolution of nursing practice, the scope of practice for health care teams, creating plans of care that integrate quality and safety for diverse patient populations, professional behavior, therapeutic communication, documentation and medical terminology.
Prerequisites
  • Acceptance into the Associate Degree Nursing Program
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support
  • Current, clear national background check
  • Current, clear Minnesota Department of Health criminal background check
  • Experience as a nursing assistant as guided by the generic ADN application packet
  • Must be eligible to take English 1101 and Math 1114
  • Up-to-date immunizations and health form
Competencies
  1. Illustrate a holistic plan of care that utilizes the nursing process while integrating concepts of quality, safety and evidenced-based practice.
  2. Compare a variety of documentation methods for the professional nurse that integrate concepts of informatics as well as legal and ethical practices.
  3. Interpret medical terminology.
  4. Differentiate scopes of practice within the health care team and health care settings.
  5. Explore the professional nursing role considering legal and ethical standards, scope and evolution of practice.
  6. Describe the components of the therapeutic relationship between the professional nurse and diverse patient populations.
