Meets MnTC Goal Areas 6 and 7. This survey course for the general college student introduces the elements, structural designs and historical styles of music. Emphasis is placed on expansion of listening skills, musical experiences, field research and cultural contexts of American music styles, including jazz, country, R&B, hip hop, rap, salsa, reggae and urban folk styles.

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the scope and variety of musical expression in American cultures.
  2. Analyze American music as the expressions of individual and communal values within a historical context.
  3. Analyze American music as the expressions of individual and communal values within a social context.
  4. Respond critically to various American music using the elements of music such as melody, rhythm, texture, harmony and timbre..
