Description
This course provides a high-level, experiential overview of the basic aspects of various healthcare-related fields of study. Topics include communication, awareness and sensitivity, successful behaviors in a healthcare setting, healthcare ethics, safety and standard precautions, legal issues in healthcare, diversity in a healthcare setting, handling patient records, and career exploration.
Competencies
  1. Explore various communication skills and team dynamics as they pertain to the healthcare setting.
  2. Describe how awareness and sensitivity to client/patient needs is critical to the healthcare setting.
  3. Discuss intrapersonal and interpersonal behaviors that lead to success in healthcare fields.
  4. Evaluate the various aspects of healthcare ethics, including but not limited to basic principles, professional relationships, the dimensions of values, and various sociopolitical, socioeconomic and religious components.
  5. Explain potential legal issues in a healthcare setting, including but not limited to confidentiality, sexual harassment, wrongful discharge, negligence, malpractice, and violence in the workplace.
  6. Explain diversity in the healthcare setting by describing one's own belief system and simultaneously exploring the belief systems and practices of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  7. Participate in experiential learning experiences in various healthcare career settings.
