Description
Meets MnTC Goal Areas 2, 6 and 7. This course introduces students to children's literature. Students read and respond to diverse, traditional and contemporary texts. Emphasis is placed on reading, analyzing, interpreting and evaluating children's literature from various contextual frameworks, such as the development of the genre, cognitive development, censorship and depictions of family, race and gender.

  1. Apply criteria for evaluating age-appropriate texts for children.
  2. Evaluate the power of literature to address personal values and goals and to challenge human endeavor.
  3. Respond critically to the readings studied by producing oral and written analyses.
  4. Identify traits of books that encourage children's social, literacy, and cognitive development.
  5. Understand the development of the genre.
  6. Identify literary terms and concepts related to the genre.
  7. Recognize major contributors (authors, illustrators, etc.) to the genre.
  8. Examine books that celebrate diversity and promote cultural awareness.
  9. Read critically children's books from various genres (biography, fantasy, poetry, picture books, etc.).
  10. Demonstrate an awareness that literature reflects human experiences and values based upon historical, political, socio-economic and cultural contexts.
  11. Participate in small and large group discussions.
