Description
This course is designed to prepare students for college-level reading and writing tasks across the disciplines. Students will practice strategies in order to develop reading proficiency and writing skills. They also will engage in all stages of the writing process, from invention and drafting to revising and editing, as they respond to texts and specific writing situations.
Prerequisites
  • Course placement is determined by assessment or completion of ENGL 0091 with a grade of C or higher.

  1. Read, comprehend and summarize a variety of texts independently and proficiently.
  2. Adapt reading strategies for genre, purpose, tone and text complexity.
  3. Determine the objective truth of claims and differentiate between fact and opinion.
  4. Identify multiple points of view in a text and determine any potential bias.
  5. Formulate and articulate an informed response to a variety of texts in writings.
  6. Employ a process to develop and strengthen writing as needed through planning, drafting, revising and editing.
  7. Produce clear, coherent writing in which the development, organization, voice and style are appropriate to task and audience.
  8. Write informative texts to examine a topic and convey ideas over both extended and shorter time frames.
  9. Responsibly integrate and credit information, ideas, images and other material in writings.
  10. Demonstrate consistent command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, syntax, capitalization, punctuation and spelling in writings.
  11. Support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence while recognizing counterclaims in writings.
