Description
In this course, students will continue their study of the dental hygiene process of care introduced in DNHY 1110, focusing on dental hygiene diagnosis, care planning (including patients with special needs) and non-surgical periodontal therapy.

  1. Identify and define the active and inactive components in dentifrices and mouthrinses.
  2. Explain the mechanism of action for preventive and therapeutic agents in dentifrices and mouthrinses.
  3. Examine the protocols for prevention and control of dental caries, including fluoride and its uses in dentistry.
  4. Differentiate the care procedures for fixed and removable dental prostheses.
  5. Create and present age-appropriate dental health presentations to community groups.
  6. Explain the objectives and techniques for instrument sharpening.
  7. Explain the significance of developing a dental hygiene diagnosis as a component of the dental hygiene process of care.
  8. Explain the goals and desirable clinical outcomes for nonsurgical periodontal therapy.
  9. Select the correct method for extrinsic stain removal.
  10. Plan dental hygiene care for patients who have special needs.
  11. Formulate a dental hygiene diagnosis based on assessment findings.
  12. Develop dental hygiene care plans for a patient with plaque-induced gingivitis, Stage I or II periodontitis, and Stage III or IV periodontitis.
