Academic warning, probation and suspension

M State is required by state and federal law to track student Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Students who fail to maintain SAP fall into three different categories:

  1. Warning Status: If at the end of the semester a student has not met either the M State 2.0  grade point average (GPA) standard or the 66.66 percent completion rate, the student will be placed on warning status for one semester. Students on warning status are eligible to register and receive financial aid.
  2. Probationary Status: A student whose suspension term has expired or has been granted reinstatement through the appeal process will be classified as probationary status. To remain an M State student, probationary status students must maintain a term minimum 2.15 GPA and 75 percent completion rate.
  3. Suspension Status: There are two ways students may find themselves in a suspended status. If at the end of the semester a student who has been on warning status has not met either the M State 2.0 GPA standard or the 66.66 percent completion rate, the student will be suspended. If at the end of the semester a student who has been on probationary status fails to maintain a term minimum 2.15 GPA and 75 percent completion rate, the student will be suspended. Students on suspension are not eligible to register or receive financial aid during their suspension period. The suspension period will be for one academic semester (Fall or Spring), i.e., students suspended following Fall Semester are suspended through the subsequent Spring Semester; students suspended following Spring or Summer Semesters are suspended through the subsequent Fall Semester.

M State upholds a student's suspension status at any other Minnesota State institution. You can find more information in M State's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
