Crystal Shumake graduated from North Dakota State College of Science with a diploma in dental assisting in 2001 and earned an associate of applied science degree in dental hygiene from Lake Superior College in 2006. She has been a dental assisting instructor at M State since 2007. During her tenure, she has earned a bachelor of science degree in community health and a master’s degree in education, as well as a certificate in online education. Shumake's teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that students learn best when they feel supported, respected and actively engaged in their own learning process. She strives to create a learning environment that is welcoming, inclusive and structured, where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and growing both academically and professionally. As an educator in dental assisting, Shumake recognizes that students are preparing not only for exams, but for real clinical environments where competence, professionalism and confidence matter. For this reason, she emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking and real-world application. Her courses are designed to connect theory with practice through demonstrations, simulations and problem-based learning activities that mirror what students will encounter in the clinical setting. Ultimately, her goal as an educator is to empower students to become competent, ethical and confident dental professionals prepared for lifelong learning. She views teaching as a partnership between instructor and student, built on trust, communication and shared responsibility. By fostering curiosity, accountability and professional pride, she hopes to not only teach skills but also inspire a lasting commitment to excellence in patient care and professional growth. When she isn't teaching, Shumake is often at the gym or spending time with her family.
