Description
Meets MnTC Goal Areas 5 and 7. This course is a sociological study of the forces which have transformed the rural setting and impacted future trends in rural America. The course will also focus on the diverse cultural heritage contributing to the rich cultural mosaic found in rural scenarios.
Competencies
  1. Employ sociological methods to investigate the unique social characteristics of rural America.
  2. Examine the social issues relevant to rural populations in the history of the United States.
  3. Compare the rural issues of select other cultures and countries to those of rural United States.
  4. Use theoretical perspectives for the study of rural issues and rural populations.
  5. Develop micro-oriented and global-oriented explanations for rural issues.
  6. Investigate the spectrum of diversity present in rural areas of the United States, particularly as it refers to ethnic and age issues.
  7. Demonstrate an awareness of the individual and the covert dynamics of unequal power relations among rural and urban areas, ethnic groups, and age-based groups.
  8. Describe the experiences and social contributions of those that shape rural American society and culture.
  9. Discuss how core groups and marginalized groups differ in their approaches to life in rural America.
