Description
Meets MnTC Goal Areas 2, 6 and 7. This course introduces students to the enduring appeal of Young Adult Literature (YAL). Students will read and respond to diverse historical and contemporary texts. Emphasis is placed on reading, analyzing and evaluating YAL from various contextual frameworks, such as the development of the genre, critical perspectives, social issues and adolescent experiences.

  1. Respond critically to the readings studied via discussions and written analyses.
  2. Describe the historical development, current trends and dominant traits of the Young Adult Literature genre.
  3. Identify literary terms and apply literary analysis via critical responses (research and/or formal presentations).
  4. Describe how literature conveys personal values and presents challenges to human endeavors.
  5. Examine how Young Adult Literature addresses diverse voices and social issues.
  6. Identify diverse forms of Young Adult Literature (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, film, etc.) including award-winning books.
  7. Articulate an informed personal reaction to the texts via discussions, oral presentations and/or writing.
  8. Draft, revise and present critical written responses to the texts studied.
  9. Identify central themes found in Young Adult Literature.
  10. Describe adolescent reading patterns in correlation to their needs, interests and challenges.
