Description
Meets MnTC Goal Area 2, 6 and 7. This course is an in-depth study of literature that has been banned or challenged. The course focuses primarily on the study of literature, but part of the lectures, discussions and student responses will address the topic of censorship. Students will read from a variety of genres.

  1. Identify literary elements, terms, and concepts.
  2. Analyze the readings that are comprised of poetry, plays, novels, short stories, creative essays, or any combination of these genres.
  3. Examine ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, and/or geographic backgrounds of authors.
  4. Examine the political, social, and/or religious objections to the literature.
  5. Understand how the text challenges or addresses issues of human diversity, such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation, and/or religious interpretation.
  6. Explain how the banned or challenged text is critically received.
  7. Explain how the banned or challenged text contributes to the literary world.
  8. Differentiate between contemporary and historical reactions to the banned/challenged literature.
  9. Interpret the literature within the framework of contemporary theoretical and historical contexts.
  10. Compose analytical responses and/or essays about the readings.
  11. Participate in small and large group literary discussions.
