Description
This course is intended to provide an overview of the theories and principles from psychology that are applicable to the teaching profession. The course addresses motivation, learning, development, instruction, assessment and classroom management, and it is designed to be a foundation for future methods and issues courses in education.
Competencies
  1. Show knowledge of theories of human development.
  2. Explain principles and theories of motivation and learning related to behavioral, cognitive, and information processing.
  3. Compare classroom evaluation procedures.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of formal and informal assessment techniques.
  5. Use research to understand and improve teaching styles.
  6. Identify the strategies most likely to promote good relationships among diverse students.
  7. Compare and contrast cooperative learning with other forms of learning, and identify the situations for which cooperative learning is best suited.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of techniques of classroom management and methods of handling problem behavior.
  9. Identify how teachers can enhance self-efficacy in students.
  10. Explain how teachers can promote metacognition in their students.
  11. Contrast the main types of instruction, including lectures, mastery learning, and direct instruction.
  12. Examine how students differ from one another in their cognitive development, and how teachers can accommodate such differences.
