Story

“I started taking PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options) classes at M State while I was attending Kennedy Secondary School in Fergus Falls, but after graduating in 2021, I took three years away from college. During that time, my dad died, and I struggled with addiction and my mental health. I was in a really bad place for more than two years. I had developed some unhealthy ways of coping, and was living in a residential home.

When I learned I was pregnant with my daughter, Iris, I decided I needed to make a change. I’m now celebrating a year of sobriety.

Coming back to M State has been really good for me. My instructors have been very understanding and supportive as I balance being a student and a new mom. Iris is 3 months old now, and I’m able to bring her to class with me when I need to.

I’m working toward A.A. degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences and Music, which I plan to complete in May. I’m also really enjoying my biology classes. When I was little, I wanted to be a scientist who studied bugs because I loved them so much. The local workforce center has offered to cover another year of schooling for, so I may stay at M State and earn another A.A. in a health-related field. I love going to school. As long as people continue to enable me to do that, I will continue to jump on the opportunity.

Long term, I’d like to earn four-year degrees in Psychology and Music. I know what it’s like to struggle and feel like you’re on your own. Now that I’ve come through that period of my life, I want to find a way to help other people. I know there are people who have gone through even harder things than I have, and I want to make a difference. I love music, and I’d like to use it to help people cope with what they’re going through.”
