Two winter art exhibits opening soon on Fergus Falls campus

M State Fergus Falls will host two art exhibits this winter, highlighting the work of three regional artists. “The Process of Satiation,” a collection of paintings by Emily Williams-Wheeler, will be on display in the Charles Beck Gallery from January 14 through March 20, and “The Eclectic Collection,” featuring linocut prints, portraiture, fiber art and mixed media by sisters Cathrin and Laura Von Bank, will be exhibited in the Waage Gallery from January 21 through May 16.
Full of bold colors and charged linework, Williams-Wheeler’s work is recognized throughout the region, with large public installations including “A Day at the Mall,” an interior and exterior mural at West Acres Mall in Fargo, and “Seasons in Fargo,” a mural spanning a skyway in the city’s downtown. She was named North Dakota Artist of the Year by TOSCA Magazine of Minneapolis and her work was the featured cover art on the first 2017 quarterly edition of 1340 Art Magazine.
“I have always loved and admired Emily's work and creativity,” says Lori Charest, M State ceramics instructor and art curator. “I am so happy to have her exhibit at the college.”
The Von Bank sisters’ exhibit, “The Eclectic Collection,” brings together a range of media in a dynamic showcase. Both artists have participated in more than 25 exhibitions and have received multiple awards, with works held in private collections nationally and internationally.
Laura Von Bank’s art draws inspiration from nature and rural life, offering a visual counterpoint to the negativity of modern media. Her printmaking process transforms incised lines and layers of ink into meaningful images. Cathrin Von Bank, whose background includes fashion and theatrical costume design, creates three-dimensional textile pieces and explores themes related to the human figure and face. She experiments with various media, recently adding landscapes to her work.
“These two sisters have been faithful participants in past M State Invitational exhibits,” Charest says. “It is a pleasure to have an exhibit of just their work.”
A joint reception with the three artists will be held Wednesday, February 12, from 4-6 p.m., offering the public an opportunity to meet the artists and celebrate their work.
Exhibits are free and open to the public during regular Fergus Falls campus hours.
