Detroit Lakes campus closure plans move forward
Following years of discussion and evaluation, M State and the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities are moving forward with plans to close the M State Detroit Lakes campus.

“This was not an easy decision, and it was not made lightly,” says M State President Carrie Brimhall. “The Detroit Lakes campus has been part of the community for generations, and we recognize that this news may be disappointing or upsetting for many students, employees, alumni and community members. At the same time, we have a responsibility to ensure M State remains strong and well-positioned to serve students across the college for years to come.”
The decision follows years of evaluation focused on aligning M State's facilities with current enrollment levels and long-term educational needs. The Detroit Lakes campus is large, aging and serves far fewer students today than it did in the past. After engaging community leaders and other stakeholders in the exploration of numerous alternatives, college and system leaders determined that closing the campus is the most sustainable long-term path forward.
M State as a whole, including its campuses in Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena and its online programs, remains financially strong. This decision reflects a proactive effort to better align college facilities with student and workforce needs while keeping resources focused on academic programs and student success across the college.
There are still many details to be worked through, but a few important points are worth emphasizing:
- The Detroit Lakes campus is not closing immediately; it is expected to remain open until at least summer 2028. A lengthy process lies ahead, including a public meeting on November 5 and review and approval by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees.
- This is not a college closure. M State will continue serving students through its three other campuses and online programs.
- This is not a program closure. Current Detroit Lakes students will have a path to complete their programs and will receive support throughout the transition. Our goal is to ensure that students experience as little disruption as possible.
- While M State's presence in Detroit Lakes may change, the college remains committed to serving Detroit Lakes area students, employers and communities.
