Dropping/adding/withdrawing from courses

There is a period of time during each semester when you can adjust your schedule by dropping and adding courses. After this period has ended, you may withdraw from courses until a specified point in the semester.

For classes that run the entire length of the semester:

  • The add period is the first three days of the semester.
  • The drop period is the first five days of the semester.
  • If you drop a class during the drop period, you will not be responsible for course tuition, and the course will not appear on your academic record.
  • After the drop period ends, withdrawing from a course will result in a grade of W on your transcript, and you will be responsible for tuition and fees for the course.
  • Each semester has a published "last day to withdraw" from classes that run the full term. Watch the academic calendar and your student email account for this date, which is set at the point when 80 percent of the term has passed. After this date, you will not be able to withdraw from the course, and your transcript will reflect your earned grade. You also can find the last day to withdraw from a specific course by checking your schedule in eServices (see below for directions).

For classes that do NOT run the entire length of the semester:

  • The drop and add period ends one business day after the first class meeting for each individual class.
  • You can add a course no later than one business day after the class first meets.
  • If you choose to drop a class by one business day after its first meeting date, you will not be responsible for tuition for the course, and it will not appear on your academic record.
  • Starting two business days after a class first meets, withdrawing from a course will result in a grade of W on your transcript, and you will be responsible for tuition and fees associated with the course.
  • You may withdraw from the course until 80 percent of the course's meeting schedule has passed. After this date, you will not be able to withdraw, and your transcript will reflect your earned grade. You also can find the last day to withdraw from a specific course by checking your schedule in eServices (see below for directions).

If you have questions about the drop/add period and last day to withdraw for a specific class, log into SpartanNet and follow these links: E-Services>Courses & Registration>View/Modify Schedule. You can hover over the clock icon in the "Last Dates to Drop/Withdraw" column to see the last day to drop or withdraw from each course.
