Former Spartan basketball player and assistant coach Janice Hendrickson has been named head coach of the Minnesota State Community and Technical College women's basketball team.
She succeeds Brenda Johnson, who resigned this spring after more than two decades with the Spartan basketball program.
"I'm looking forward to continuing the traditions created by Coaches Ann Williams and Brenda Johnson," said Hendrickson. "Playing for M State was a fantastic experience. We want to continue to provide a similar experience for future athletes that emphasize our strong commitment to the classroom, community and Spartan basketball."
Hendrickson, a native of Upsala, played for Williams from 2002 to 2004 and graduated from M State in Fergus Falls before earning degrees in dental assisting and dental hygiene on M State's Moorhead campus. She was an assistant coach for Williams from 2007 to 2011 and for Johnson from 2011 until the end of the 2013-14 season.
Hendrickson works at LifeSmiles Dental in Fergus Falls and is also the Junior Olympic volleyball coach in Underwood.
Johnson, a 4th grade teacher in Ashby, played volleyball, basketball and softball at M State from 1982 to 1984 and was assistant basketball coach from 1989 to 2011, when she was named head coach.
"I've been so fortunate to be able to give back to a college that has given me so much over the past 25 years," Johnson said. "The students and M State staff have been my second family, and I feel truly blessed to be a Spartan. The opportunities I had and the people I met at M State are truly some of my favorites."
