M State Choirs Present 'Messiah' Holiday Concert
Come celebrate the holidays at Minnesota State Community and Technical College as its three choirs join with members of the Community Orchestra in the "Messiah" Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in Legacy Hall on the college campus.
The 80-plus voices of the M State Concert Choir, Chamber Chorale and Voice Ensemble, all under the direction of M State Choral Music Director Teresa Ashworth, will perform a mix of choral numbers and holiday favorites, including “Carol of the Bells,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Ding Dong Merrily on High” and “Silent Night.” A rendition of “I Need Thee” will feature solos by Sandy Thimgan and Samantha Velde.
A string quartet also will perform two numbers, including “Winter” by M State music instructor David Stoddard.
Accompanied by the Community Orchestra, the three M State choirs will then join in a combined choir to perform selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” with solos by Kim Blumberg, Sue Kilde, Carol Tornquist and Everett Jacobson, along with Wally Warhol on trumpet.
Tickets are $9 in advance and $11 at the door for adults, and $7 in advance and $8 at the door for students. Advance tickets are available in the M State Box Office, by calling 218.736.1600 or online at mstatetickets.com.
The Messiah Holiday Concert on Friday evening will be following by a free community sing-along at the college from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 8.
On Saturday, for the first hour, singers are invited to gather in Legacy Hall to perform five selections from “Messiah,” accompanied by the Community Chamber Orchestra.
Holiday refreshments will follow the “Messiah” performance, and the sing-along will then move to Waage Theatre for more traditional holiday music. M State Director of Bands Jim Iverson will lead the M State Concert Band in several Mannheim Steamroller holiday selections, followed by holiday caroling for community members of all ages.
