M State students, SGAs honored for leadership roles

M State SGA representatives, advisors and administrators attended the spring conference for LeadMN.

M State students Shane Motschenbacher and Cecelia Morales were awarded statewide honors, and several M State students were elected to leadership positions during the recent spring conference of the student advocacy group LeadMN.

Motschenbacher was named Governing Council Member of the Year, and Morales was recognized as Platform Committee Member of the Year. Both are students on M State’s Wadena campus.

They were among 20 students from the four M State campus SGAs who attended the conference, held in April at Breezy Point.

Also at the conference, the Wadena and Moorhead SGAs were awarded the Star Campus designation, given to organizations that meet high standards for involvement in student government. This is the first year that either campus achieved the Star Campus honor.

Four Moorhead campus SGA members ran for statewide office at the conference, with Joshua Hansen elected as the Governing Council At-Large Alternate. Other M State candidates for state offices were Matthew Benjamin, Haroon Al Hayder and Britta Sather.

Also elected to regional positions within LeadMN’s Northwest Region were Kelsey Powers (Moorhead), Platform Committee Representative; John Reinke (Detroit Lakes), Platform Committee Representative Alternate; Matthew Benjamin (Moorhead), Governing Council Representative; and Tanya Hamandishe (Moorhead), Governing Council Representative Alternate.
