Participants are welcome and volunteers are needed as Minnesota State Community and Technical College and the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Moorhead bring Ruby’s Pantry to M State’s Moorhead campus each month.
M State and First Congregational UCC are partners in sponsoring the monthly visit by the non-profit organization, which collects and distributes corporate surplus food items in rural areas. For each $20 donation, participants will get a “share” of approximately two laundry baskets of grocery items, including both food and paper goods.
Distributions are on M State’s Moorhead campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m. (or as long as supplies last) on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The next distribution will be on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
College Social Worker Marisa Gonzalez said M State sees Ruby’s Pantry as an opportunity to partner with the community to address the increasing cases of food insecurity among college students and community members.
There are no income or residency requirements for participants. First-time users will need to register, however, and people should bring two or three laundry baskets or large boxes for each share they plan to purchase. Enter the college, located at 1900 28th Ave. S., through Door W2.
The donated food items can include fresh produce, canned goods, meat, dairy products, and frozen and refrigerated items, depending on what surplus items have been provided each month. Gonzalez said participants can expect to get 18-21 different items.
While the monthly event is staffed by M State students, faculty and staff along with UCC congregation members, additional community volunteers are needed. For more information or to volunteer, contact Gonzalez at 218.299.6839 or email@example.com, or the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Moorhead.
Ruby’s Pantry has more than 60 distribution sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin, including M State’s Detroit Lakes campus.
