A strong last-day showing sealed a second consecutive third-place finish for the M State golfers competing in the 2017 national tournament, and for the first time ever three Spartans earned All-American honors.
The M State golfers shot 305 on the fourth day of the NJCAA Division III competition, which ran June 6-9 in Chatauqua, N.Y., for an overall total of 1248. First place went to Georgia Military Academy (1215), and the second-place team was Columbus (Ohio) State Community College (1239).
Individual honors went to Spartans Chris Swenson (7th place overall, 2nd Team All-American), Mason Landborg (10th overall, 2nd Team All-American) and Nick Kress (17th overall, Honorable Mention All-American).
“This team really impressed a lot of people in New York with their excellent golf,” said Spartan golf coach Jason Retalaff. “It’s pretty special for our team to bring home the third place trophy. I’m very proud of this great group of young men.
“It was fantastic to see three of our players earn All-American honors. Nick Kress knew he needed a good round (Friday) and went out and got it with a 75. Mason Landborg had an outstanding season, and this truly capped it off with a great week. Chris Swenson led the way for us this week and capped his career with back-to-back All American honors. He is a special player and has left a wonderful legacy on our golf program.”
Final results for the Spartan golfers were:
Chris Swenson- 301 (79-74-75-73)
Mason Landborg- 309 (75-80-78-76)
Nick Kress- 312 (80-79-78-75)
Will Tickel- 326 (80-82-83-81) (T-34th)
