The Minnesota State Community and Technical College Jazz Band invites music fans to warm up with the hot sounds of jazz at its annual fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in Waage Theatre on the Fergus Falls campus.
A special treat will be the guest appearance of Larry McWilliams, director of jazz studies emeritus at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., where the main performing group in the jazz program has a reputation as one of the finest collegiate jazz bands in the country.
McWilliams will join the M State Jazz Band in performances of “Evergreen,” “Lonnie’s Lament,” “Saving all My Love” and “Parking Lot Blues.”
The Jazz Band numbers will include Latin (“Hasta La Pasta Mama”), swing (“Momentum”), funk (“Word”) and rock (“Welcome to the Jungle”). “Bari Bari Good” will feature bari saxophone player Kris Lien of Fergus Falls, and other soloists will include Jennifer Kaminski-Horak and M State alumni Jim Worner.
The M State Combo with Kris Lien, Gracia Larson, Tommy Bowman, Susie Sanner and Titus Torkelson will be coming to the neighborhood with some special guests from Sesame Street.
McWilliams has extensive performing experience with groups including the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Glenn Miller Orchestra, and in Broadway shows including “Hello Dolly” and “Cabaret.” He also has performed with Henry Mancini, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra Jr., The Temptations and the Manhattan Transfer vocal group.
