For the 6th year in a row, the M State Spartan golfers will represent their region in the NJCAA Division III National Championship at Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, N.Y, in June.
The Spartans claimed the Region XIII and MCAC championship Oct. 4 after being tied with Bismarck State College following the first day of the two-day tournament at The Quarry at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik.
The Spartans ran away with the title during the second day of competition with score of 623.
“Considering the moment and a national tourney trip was on the line, it was one of the better single-day team performances that I can remember in our golf program,” said Spartan Coach Jason Retzlaff.
Bismarck placed second with a two-day total of 662, followed by Mesabi Range (687), Southwest Tech (692) and Rochester (695).
Spartan Mason Landborg was MCAC Tournament medalist and runner-up in Region XIII with a two-day total of 151. Teammate Chris Swenson was MCAC runner-up and third in Region XIII with a 154.
Other Spartan scores included Nick Kress and Will Tickel with 159 and Kyle Boe with 168.
The national championship is set for June 7-10. The Spartans finished 3rd in 2016 and have finished in the top five for five consecutive years.
“We have been proud of this team on and off the course, and it’s exciting to know they will have a chance to compete for a national championship next June,” Retzlaff said.
