M State’s Bjerke, Borcherding receive national teaching awards

Two Minnesota State Community and Technical College instructors are being honored with national awards recognizing their excellence in education and college leadership.

Shawn Bjerke and Dr. Matthew Borcherding received Excellence Awards from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development and will be recognized formally in May at the NISOD International Conference on Teaching and Learning in Austin, Texas.

Both are biology instructors, Bjerke on M State’s Moorhead campus and Borcherding on the Fergus Falls campus.

Bjerke, who has taught at M State since 1995, said he focuses on making his subject material applicable to the everyday lives and careers of his students. “I also enjoy allowing student questions to guide the directions of my courses,” he said.

Borcherding joined the M State faculty in 2011 and said he relishes the opportunity to work at a college with small class sizes, which he sees as paramount to the success of students. “The students always come first,” he said.

NISOD is dedicated to the professional development of higher education faculty, administrators and staff, and to improvements in teaching and learning with the ultimate goal of student success. Its members include more than 700 community colleges around the world.
