Description: Meets MnTC Goal Area 8. This course will introduce students to the Beiping (Mandarin) dialect of Chinese including basic grammar, the Pin Yin system of transliteration and reading and writing Chinese characters.

Corequisites: None
  1. Identify and use the basic sounds of Chinese including tones and language-specific consonants.
  2. Understand and use the Pin Yin system of transliteration.
  3. Read and write basic Chinese characters.
  4. Use stative verbs, direct objects, and indirect objects in sentences.
  5. Use specified, numbered, and measured nouns in sentences.
  6. Use auxiliary verbs and verb-object compounds in sentences.
  7. Use modified nouns (by other nouns, stative verbs, and clauses) in sentences.
  8. Use equational sentences.
  9. Use basic Chinese tense forms including present tense, completed action (le), and probability (ba).
  10. Describe key linguistic properties of Chinese languages.
  11. Demonstrate the relationship of Chinese culture and politics to the Beiping (Mandarin) dialect.
