Description
This course will provide students with the knowledge and resources to enter practice as a Mental Health Behavioral Aide II. Students will achieve entry-level competencies in providing therapeutic and rehabilitative care for children and adolescents with emotional disturbances. This course is not an MnTC Goal Area 5 course and may not be used as a replacement for a Goal Area 5 course. This course is designed for students enrolled in the Mental Health Behavioral Aide II certificate program.
Competencies
  1. Identify and understand the purpose of pharmacological interventions in children with mental illnesses.
  2. Identify and understand the purpose of treatment interventions in children with mental illnesses.
  3. Describe basic data practices and privacy issues as they relate to children with mental illnesses.
  4. Review therapeutic communication techniques for children with mental illnesses.
  5. Identify personal biases related to children and families with mental illnesses.
  6. Demonstrate increased self-awareness in working with children with mental illnesses.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of suicidal ideation and prevention in children with mental illnesses.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the aide's impact in working with a child in his or her home.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of skill-building in peer-to-peer and parent-child interactions.
  10. Review techniques for performing as a practice partner or role-play partner.
  11. Review strategies for redirecting and de-escalating at-risk behavior.
  12. Identify and define causes of behavior.
