Spartans win fifth consecutive Region XIII and MCAC Championships
M State Athletics offer exciting action for players and spectators in eight National Junior College Athletic Association sports.

Pratt, Hanson Named Spartan Student Athletes of the Year
Minnesota State Community and Technical College's Spartan athletic department held its 42nd All Sports Banquet on May 4 in Legacy Hall on the Fergus Falls campus. This event recognizes the individual and team accomplishments of the Spartan athletic teams. Also included in the evening is the selection by the coaching staff of the Student Athlete of the Year and the Coaches Award.
Female Student Athlete of the Year
Danielle Pratt, a sophomore from Clarissa and a graduate of Eagle Valley High School, was honored as the Female Student Athlete of the Year. Pratt was a three-sport standout for the Lady Spartans, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball. She also is a two-year recipient of the Presidential Scholarship and has been recognized in each of her four semesters as a Minnesota College Athletic Conference All-Division Academic Athlete. She was named 2nd Team All Division in volleyball this fall.
Danielle will receive her Associate in Arts degree and an Associate in Science degree in accounting and will transfer to Bemidji State University.
Male Student Athlete of the Year
Fergus Fall native Austin Hanson was honored as Male Student Athlete of the Year. Austin plays left field and second base for the Spartan baseball team and has been an outstanding student and a team leader for two years. Austin was an MCAC Academic Athlete for spring of 2014 and will receive the same recognition this spring.
Austin earned his Associate in Arts degree and is transferring to Minnesota State University Mankato.
Male and Female Coaches Awards
The Spartan coaching staff also selects a male and female recipient of its Coaches Award, presented to a student athlete who has been extremely important to the athletic department in attitude and willingness to assist where needed.
The Female Coaches Award was presented to Cheyanne O'Neal, a sophomore from Battle Lake, and the Male Coaches Award was presented to Jake Torgerson, a sophomore from Morris.

The M State Spartan Athletic Department recognized the individual and team accomplishments of its student athletes at the 41st All Sports Banquet on May 5 on the Fergus Falls campus.
Student Athletes of the Year
Maria Johnson, a sophomore from Pelican Rapids, was named Female Student Athlete of the Year. Maria participated in women's basketball and softball during her freshman and sophomore years and was a two-year Academic Athlete. She was named to the MCAC Honorable Mention All Division basketball team as a freshman, and as a sophomore Maria was named second team All Division for basketball and first team All Division for softball.
Peter Gaustad, a sophomore and 2012 graduate of Fergus Falls High School, was honored as the Male Student Athlete of the Year. He combined strong academic success with success on the baseball field and earned numerous baseball awards during his two-year career with the Spartans including MCAC pitcher of the week, MCAC player of the week, NJCAA pitcher of the week, Southern Division MCAC first team, All MCAC first team and Region XIII first team. He is captain of the 2014 squad.
The Coaches Award recognizes the students who best exemplify Spartan Pride and exhibit the dedication and hard work that make M State a great place to work and participate in athletics. Winners are selected by Spartan athletic coaches. This year's recipients are Donna Ripplinger and Alvin Freeman.
Donna was recognized for her willingness to help whenever needed and for her positive personality. "She always stops by the coaches' offices to see if there is anything that needs to be done," the coaches wrote. "Her attitude and work ethic are appreciated in the Athletic Department."
Alvin has worked for the football and softball programs and in concessions for volleyball and basketball. "He has a great work ethic and a fun personality and is definitely deserving of this award," according to the coaches.
