ON THIS PAGE:Inaugural Alumni vs. Spartans Baseball Game Inaugural Alumni vs. Spartans Baseball GameThe FIRST EVER Alumni vs. Spartans baseball game was held Saturday, September 19th. The event consisted of one 9 inning game pitting the Alumni vs this year's Spartan roster. The Alumni Squad was coached by long-time Spartan Ass't Coach Kyle Johnston along with Ass't Coach Jake Erickson. This high-powered team of alumni featured Pro, D-1, D-2 and D-3 talent. These old-school Spartans came from teams that have won 3 state championships and a trip to the NJCAA World Series. This event was a fund-raiser for our Spartan's who will have a new look this Spring. Spartan Baseball Names New Head CoachesFormer Spartan baseball players Kellen Shebeck and Jarrod Asmus have been hired as coaches for the baseball program at M State - Fergus Falls. Both Shebeck and Asmus, who will share coaching duties, played for M State during the 2000 and 2001 seasons and have been active in summer baseball programs in the area. "We are very fortunate to have Jarrod and Kellen take over the Spartan baseball program," said Steve King, athletic coordinator at M State. "They have great enthusiasm and bring a high level of playing and coaching experience to the program. Both are outstanding young men who have a passion for Spartan athletics and understand the commitment to excellence we want on and off the field." Asmus, a 1999 graduate of Morris Area High School, continued his collegiate baseball career with the Bison of North Dakota State University, graduating from NDSU with a degree in health and physical education. He has coached American Legion baseball and been active in other summer recreation programs. Asmus is employed at Lake Region Healthcare's Athletic Republic, and he and wife Heidi have two children, 2-year-old Riley and 4-month-old Alex. Shebeck, who graduated in 1999 from Underwood High School, played baseball at the University of North Dakota following his Spartan career. He graduated from UND with a degree in physical education and minors in health and coaching. In 2005, he coached the Fergus Falls American Legion team to the state tournament. He is vice president of Farmers State Bank in Underwood, and he and wife Savanna have a 1-year-old son, Jakoby. |
