Employee bio

John Charles Cox was born in Duluth in 1982. In 2004 he graduated from Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls with an AA in Liberal Arts. He returned to Duluth to attend the University of Minnesota, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Studio Art Emphasis in 2006. Cox earned his Master of Fine Arts-Painting Emphasis from the University of South Dakota in 2010 and is currently an instructor of visual arts at M State in Fergus Falls.

Cox has shown his Artwork extensively over the past six years, participating in more than 75 regional, national and international exhibitions.

Selected national exhibitions include Los Angeles; San Francisco; Atlanta; Chicago; Baltimore; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Minneapolis; Kansas City, Mo; St. Louis, Mo.; Roswell, N.M.; Brooklyn and Manhattan in New York; Portland, Ore.; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; and Washington, D.C.

International exhibitions include Melbourne, Australia; Windsor, Australia; Calgary, Alberta; Montreal, Quebec; Toronto, Ontario; Vancouver, British Columbia; Wan Chai, Hong Kong; Siena, Italy; Cuernavaca, Mexico; Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Granada, Nicaragua; Karachi, Pakistan; Lahore, Pakistan; and Cáceres, Spain.

STATEMENT:
Some of the topics, themes, and concepts Cox is currently exploring in his work include (in no particular order): Hockney’s Joiner Theories, Cezanne’s use of multiple viewpoints on a single picture plane, the history of drawing from sculpture, illustrative mark-making, construction, deconstruction, structure, geometry, science, invention, reinvention, modification, enhancement, juxtaposition, unease, peculiarity, the ideal human form, hybrids, cyborgs, narrative structures, narrative devices, communion, reverie, analysis and red figure pottery.
