Ashley Erickson of Fergus Falls and Jamie Vickaryous of Alexandria, both nursing students on M State's Fergus Falls campus, are two of the four 2013-14 recipients of the Mary Beth Hagen Wedum Scholarship.
Fergus Area College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Mary Beth Hagen Wedum Scholarship Endowment with an $98,000 gift from the J. A. Wedum Foundation. This fund will support scholarships for single mothers who attend the Fergus Falls campus of M State and is given in memory of Mary Beth Hagen Wedum, a founder and board member of the J.A. Wedum Foundation.
Mary Beth Hagen grew up in Fergus Falls and graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1953. As a divorced single mother of two young daughters, she began her college career at Fergus Falls Junior College in the 1960s. She completed her four-year degree at St. Cloud State University. Mary Beth married John A. Wedum, and together they raised their two daughters, Dawn Wedum Downs and Dana Wedum Kennelly. The Wedums became successful business people and philanthropists, and their success in developing the J. A. Wedum Foundation has enabled them to support scholarships at several colleges in Minnesota.
"How fitting that a scholarship fund be established in Mary Beth's honor at M State - Fergus Falls Campus, her alma mater," said Rob Bigwood, president of the Fergus Area College Foundation board of directors . "This scholarship will encourage and enable single mothers to pursue their education on the Fergus Falls campus."
Fergus Falls native Dayton Soby is a member of the J.A. Wedum Foundation board of directors and was instrumental in securing this gift for Fergus Area College Foundation. Dayton's father, the late B.K. Soby, was a founder of Fergus Area College Foundation nearly 50 years ago.

More than 130 scholarship recipients were recognized Nov. 8 during the Fergus Area College Foundation's annual Scholarship Reception on the Fergus Falls campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College.
Students, parents, donors and M State faculty and staff gathered to celebrate student achievement and to thank Foundation and scholarship donors for their generosity.
Student speakers were Rhoda Christenson, Daniel Tungseth and Rebecca Moe. Student musicians Johanna Becker, Megan Endreson and Hazen Roller-Olson performed during the program.
Through its philanthropic work, FACF provides financial support for scholarships and funding for various campus initiatives. During this academic year, the Foundation will award $140,000 in student scholarships.
"We are extremely proud of these outstanding students and are grateful to our area communities and alumni for their faithful financial support of the Foundation's work," said Carolyn Glesne, executive director.
The 15-member FACF board of directors manages more than 80 endowed funds and conducts an annual fund campaign to provide these scholarships.

Congratulations to Maranda Shillingstad of Fergus Falls, winner in the M State Foundation Raffle conducted by all four M State foundations in March. Maranda won four tickets to the April 14 Timberwolves game at the Target Center and a two-night stay at the Country Inns & Suites in Plymouth. Shown is Fergus Area College Foundation President Rob Bigwood presenting Maranda her prize. Proceeds from the raffle will be used for student scholarships on each campus.
Jerry Covington, M State-Fergus Falls sophomore, meets his scholarship donor, former faculty member, John Donahue.
Former faculty member John Donahue (1967-1982) visited the campus in January 2012 and had the opportunity to congratulate M State student Jerry Covington, 2011-12 recipient of "The Aspirin" scholarship. Donahue named and donated this scholarship to honor a student who has gone out of his or her way to "save the day" for a theater instructor. Donahue was a theater director both on campus and in the community during his tenure at the college. He advised the college newspaper staff and taught English, speech and English as a second language classes. He is retired and lives in Queretaro, Mexico, where he enjoys the Mexican culture, entertaining friends and teaching English classes. Fergus Area College Foundation thanks John for creatively and generously honoring one of our students!
Covington, a sophomore business major, is the current Student Senate president and has been active in the theater and music departments at M State - Fergus Falls.
